My name is Conrad and I’m a home building contractor. Figuring out who to hire for building your home can be daunting. I’ve had a lot of friends and family ask my opinion over the years about who to hire, what to look for, etc. I thought I’d share my advice that I’ve given to them.
Having someone build a home for you is a project like no other, especially if your goal is to have a well-made beautiful property when they are done. It is very easy to hire a terrible contractor, especially if you are not wise enough to avoid these common mistakes.
Never hire someone over the Internet. Sure, you may have heard that they are the best around, but that is not a good reason to walk into an agreement with your eyes shut. The reality is that the same person can offer two clients very different experiences. Meeting in person will help you determine whether your personalities mesh well enough to work together.
Always get everything in writing. You may have heard that oral contracts are legally binding, but it is not very easy to walk into a courtroom with your word as your only evidence. A detailed contract that includes the work that should be done, a reasonable time frame and payment expectations needs to be signed by both parties prior to getting started.
As long as you keep these rules in mind, you should have an uneventful experience. Before you know it, you will be in the home of your dreams. Below is a story from my friend Joe, who gives his input on his experience finding the right contractor.
Finding The Best Home Building Contractors
I decided that I was ready to have a house built. This wasn’t something that had just come to me, I had been thinking about it for a very long time. I was ready, though, and I was going to look for the very best home building contractors I could find. I pretty much knew what I wanted, but I wanted input, too, from someone who had built many homes.
I started my search by asking my friends for recommendations. I was so excited to get some names of those who built homes in the area. I drove around and looked at the contractors’ work so I could get an idea of the types of homes they built. It was so cool to see the different homes and to imagine myself living in a home that I had been dreaming about for many years.
After looking at the homes built by the contractors I learned of, I called them to make an appointment to meet with them and discuss what I wanted. I could not wait to have the meetings and start to make my dream into a reality. I knew that it would be more than amazing.
